USAID delegate visits the newly established fishermen cooperative facilities at Jounieh Port

On October 31 2015, the USAID’s deputy assistant administrator for the Middle East, with oversight of Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq, Mrs Mona Yaacoubian, accompanied by the USAID Mission Director in Lebanon, Mrs Carolyn Brian and Lebanon’s Economic Growth Office Director at USAID Lebanon, Ms. Cybill Sigler and a team from the USAID Lebanon’s office visited the newly established fishermen cooperative facilities at Jounieh port along with RMF/BALADI team to check the project’s progress and its various activities. jouniehOct2015The USAID delegate met with the project’s partners from Jounieh municipality, the Fishermen’s Coop, Urban Fabraca and local fishermen, to learn more about the project components, its objectives, work progress and socio-economic benefits to date.


The visit started at the fish auction area for a brief technical overview of the USAID BALADI-funded activity presented by Ms. Christine Sayegh USAID BALADI Project Management Specialist. The tour continued to cover the renovated facilities starting with the indoor fish selling area and fish cooking station, the cooperative management quarters and the boat repair workshop room guided by RMF BALADI Program Director Mrs. Natasha Marashlian Saadeh.


Moreover, the mayor of Jounieh Municipality, Mr. Antoine Frem, expressed his gratitude and thanked the USAID and RMF for their contribution and efforts in improving the fishermen cooperative facilities


Ms. Soha Frem from Urban Fabraca, a civil society/volunteer group and a support body, and main stakeholder to Jounieh project explained during the tour how the local communities came together and capitalized on their expertise for the development of their city “Jounieh”. The tour ended with a breakfast gathering on site, and a visit to the boat repair workshop room.



Within the framework of "BALADI" program funded by the US Agency for International Development in Lebanon (USAID), "Statistics Lebanon" outsourced by Rene Moawad Foundation and Caritas Lebanon is conducting a survey to measure the improvement of public services in the selected municipalities for the first round of "BALADI" program through the perception of various number of community representatives from the targeted local communities.
