On July, 12, 2019, the municipality and community of Qab Elias – Wadi Al Dalm (Zahle district, Bekaa Valley) celebrated the completion of the rural tourism venue and hiking trail implemented with the assistance of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). USAID, through the BALADI Project, implemented by Caritas Lebanon, provided US$161,950 to assist Qob Elias municipality in establishing a 15 km hiking trail including more than 12 archaeological and cultural points of interest, a tourist information center and six kiosks that sell local products. This USAID assistance program benefits more than 5,000 persons by attracting visitors to the area and increasing residents’ income.

On Friday, March 8, 2019, USAID/Lebanon, under the BALADI program implemented by Caritas Lebanon and in partnership with Kawkaba municipality inaugurated the Kawkaba Eco Village recently established with USAID assistance in Kawkaba (Hasbaya District). The opening ceremony occurred in the presence of USAID Project Management Specialist Mrs. Christine Sayegh, Director of programs and operations of Caritas Lebanon Director of Programs and Operations Mr. Bruno Attieh, and Mayor of Kawkaba Municipality Dr. Elie Abou Nakoul. The Kawkaba Eco Village project is part of the municipality’s efforts to promote sustainable rural tourism in the region, revive the traditions of the village, boost economic growth and bring people, tourists and residents together. The speeches were followed by a technical presentation on the project and a short documentary showcasing the project and the village; it was then followed by a tour of the completed venue, the bungalows, and a traditional Lebanese products market. The project consists of seven bungalows, a snack bar, and a garden for local and international tourists in the rural area of Hasbaya. USAID provided $250K worth of in-kind assistance to support the municipality and community of Kawkaba to create an eco-village that will benefit more than 1,500 Lebanese residents, tourists, and youth. This initiative is being implemented in partnership with the Kawkaba municipality, which contributed $246K worth of land, labor, and supplies. #USAID #BALADI #CaritasLebanon #KEV

       

Highlights

Within the framework of "BALADI" program funded by the US Agency for International Development in Lebanon (USAID), "Statistics Lebanon" outsourced by Rene Moawad Foundation and Caritas Lebanon is conducting a survey to measure the improvement of public services in the selected municipalities for the first round of "BALADI" program through the perception of various number of community representatives from the targeted local communities.
